Overview
An architectural video mapping installation that reimagines the format of the XTERRA 2026 sporting event.
Challenge
To translate the values and excitement of a global off-road brand into a unique three-dimensional visual experience, creating a touchpoint that celebrates and respects Malta’s historical heritage.

Solution
A visually striking, emotion-driven installation that uses the historic façade of the Church of Gozo as a living screen: the brand blends seamlessly with its surroundings, creating a highly memorable communication platform.

The project
The project created for XTERRA Gozo goes beyond the traditional concept of a local sporting event: the historic and urban setting ceases to be a mere backdrop and becomes the beating heart of the brand’s narrative. Using video mapping technology, XTERRA projected its core values onto a fluid architectural structure, completely eliminating the logistical costs, setup time, and environmental impact of traditional physical installations.
A flexible communication tool, capable of evolving according to the different moments of the program:
- Friday evening (Opening): The focus is on visual suspense and institutional positioning, capturing the audience’s attention and reinforcing the global community’s sense of belonging.
- Saturday evening (Award Ceremony): During the awards ceremony, the façade reflected the solemnity of the podium, celebrating the athletes’ performances through a visual parallel with the rugged beauty of the landscape.
- Saturday night (Party): The infrastructure transforms into a visual ecosystem that reacts to sound frequencies, maximizing emotional engagement and entertainment.
This ability to transform night after night has allowed XTERRA to redefine the standards of live events: a new way of creating entertainment that highlights the identity of the venue while fully respecting its history.

Inside the experience
- The Opening: A countdown kicks off the show. The XTERRA logo comes to life on the stone, followed by a 3D finish line arch that reveals the natural biomes of the world championships. Streams of particle light envelop the church’s rose windows and converge on the XTERRA Malta logo, while the visual rhythm accelerates in sync with the runner’s heartbeat and breath.
- The Awards Ceremony: The facade lights up with organic textures of wood and Mediterranean vegetation combined with the island’s historical symbols. This backdrop accompanies the athletes on the podium, linking their achievements to the beauty of the Maltese landscape.
- The DJ Set: During the closing party, the projection moves beyond the institutional narrative and becomes pure visual energy. The graphics and 3D animations react in real time to the music’s frequencies, moving in sync with the DJ’s beats.

About the design
- Materials and Local Identity: A color palette featuring textures inspired by Mediterranean vegetation. Iconographic references to megalithic temples and the Knights of Malta. The historical heritage is an active part of the message—not mere scenery.
- Biometric and Environmental Sound Design: Custom audio tracks for each show. Spatialization of breathing and heartbeat to amplify the sensory impact of the athletic performance. A multisensory experience that the audience remembers more deeply.
- Sound-Reactive (Real-Time): Performance During the Party section, animations and volumetric movements react in real time to the audio of the DJ set. No manual synchronization required. Less operational complexity during the event’s most chaotic phase.
